Jane's Amazingly Cute First Week

We can't believe how cute our baby Jane is. We've been carefully observing her to see what she can "do"--which isn't much, but we get really excited about her few activities. She loves to stare into people's faces and look around at her surroundings with her big, beautiful eyes. Her expression is really thoughtful, almost doleful. She also loves to wave her hands around, and her fingers are really long so it looks like a graceful dance or like she's conducting an orchestra. She also tries to fit her fist into her mouth and sometimes gets a thumb or two fingers in there. On our 19-week ultrasound we saw her search for and suck her thumb, so we know she has liked sucking for a long time. She also hiccups a lot just as she did in utero. Her hiccups seem like they would be painful, but she seems unperturbed by them. Janie seems very at peace most of the time, in fact. When she does fuss, we try very hard to discover the reason--it's so hard to hear her be upset or accept that we can't help. Mostly she likes sitting in someone's lap, her boppy pillow, or Moses basket and hanging out with the fam. Janie has had two outings this week already--to church for Palm Sunday and to the Doctor's office. She is doing great with feeding and sleeping. She has had a couple nights where she only woke up to be fed and slept the rest of the night, which is great for us. We are slowly learning to master the art of swaddling and also using white noise to help her sleep well. She is so sweet with her perfect bow-shaped mouth, round cheeks, and intense dark eyes. She moves her mouth around and seems to smile in her sleep or grimace dramatically. We really can't believe she's ours! I keep thinking of all the people I know or know of who have had children...how can it be so normal and common but so strange and surreal at the same time?
